“Pongal” is one of the most important festivals celebrated by people of Tamilnadu state and Pondicherry a union territory in India and in Srilanka. What is Pongal Festival?
“Pongal” is a Tamil word which means “To boil”. Pongal is celebrated as a thanksgiving ceremony for that year’s harvest. Pongal is one of the important festivals for Hindus in India which falls in Mid-January.
Pongal also happens to be the name of a dish consumed during this festive time, which is sweetened rice boiled with lentils.
Pongal is a four-days-long festival celebrated in Tamilnadu when crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric etc. are harvested in January. With different names, all the south states celebrate Pongal.
In Andhrapradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, Pongal is know as “Makara Sankranthi”.
Pongal 2019 Dates are 15th January Tuesday to 18th January Friday.

First Day of Pongal 2019 Festival:
The Bhogi festival is celebrated in honor of the god of rain and the lord of lords who is Lord Indra. The ritual of Bhogi Mantalu is also observed this day, during which old and useless items in the house are thrown into a bonfire which is traditionally made of cow dung cakes and wood.

Second Day of Pongal 2019 Festival:

During the second day, a special ritual is performed where rice and milk are boiled together in an earthen pot - to which a turmeric plant is tied - out in the open as an offering to the sun god. Along with this, sticks of sugarcane, coconuts, and bananas are also offered.
Another important aspect of this day is the kolam, the traditional design hand-drawn at the entrance of houses with lime powder. This auspicious drawing must be done early in the morning and only after a bath.
Third Day of Pongal 2019 Festival:

The third day of Pongal is called as Mattu Pongal. This day is celebrated in the name of cows. The cattle are adorned with bells, balloons, and garlands and people worship them.
The Fourth Day of Pongal 2019 Festival:
The fourth-day of Pongal festival is called as Kaanum (or Kanu) Pongal which is the last day of Pongal. During this day, a ritual is performed where the leftover sweet Pongal and other food are set out in the courtyard on a washed turmeric leaf, along with betel leaves, betel nuts, and sugar cane.
Women of the household carry out this ritual in the name of their brothers, asking for their prosperity.
